Charleena Lyles called 911 for help, police shot her dead

    • A black, pregnant mother of three in Seattle called police to report an attempted burglary at her apartment on Sunday. But when two white Seattle Police Department officers arrived, they reportedly shot and killed the knife-wielding woman in front of her children.
    • She has been identified by relatives as 30-year-old Charleena Lyles. Her family is distraught, the Seattle Times has reported.
    • Police confirmed the shooting happened Sunday morning, after officers responded to Lyles’ Seattle apartment. They’d had previous contact with Lyles, who was alerted to the responding two officers as a “hazard,” the Times reported.
    • The shooting is being reviewed by SPD’s Force Investigation Team and its Office of Professional Accountability, police chief Kathleen O’Toole said. The local prosecutor’s office will also review the incident, the Times reported. Read more (6/19/17)

Some statistics show that about 800,000 people die from suicide each year. Suicide can be prevented, especially by getting help from a professional like a psychologist.

Reblog with something that you live for. It can be a global reason or a personal reason that keeps you moving forward every day. It can even be an inspirational quote. Reblog with a reason to live. Let’s try to reach 800,000 reblogs.

Tips That Can Save Your Kid’s Life.

    THIS IS IMPORTANT

When I was a child, from the time I was about four and could understand things, my mom told me and my brother that we should have a secret word. That way, if we were ever in trouble or felt unsafe and we didn’t want the people around us to know we needed her to come get us, we could let her know. So she let us pick the word and my brother and I chose the phrase “peanut butter cups.” (I’m happy to share the phrase now since both my brother and I are adults now).

I used the phrase twice in my life. Once, I was at a friends house when I eight years old. Her dad got really drunk and was throwing things against the wall. I was really scared and I didn’t want to draw attention to myself on the phone when I called my mom to come get me because I didn’t know if he would get more violent if I asked her to come get me. So I called her and was calm and after a couple minutes I asked “Hey mommy, did you get me those peanut butter cups from the store?” And she said “I’ll be right there.” And she came and got me within minutes.

Second, I was a teenager spending the night at a friends house. Her brother and dad were drinking and they started talking about things that made me uncomfortable - ie: what they liked to do to women. My friend didn’t seem perturbed and said that was normal for them and that I shouldn’t worry. But I was worried because they were really drunk and I was 15 and the only ‘woman’ around that wasn’t related to them. I went in my friends room, told her I needed to call my mom and say goodnight. Before I hung up with her I asked “Next time we go to the store, can we get some peanut butters cups? I’ve been craving them.” And she came and got me, just like that.

Two incidents, one as a young child, one years later as a teen. Don’t discredit this stuff, it fucking works. My brother used it a few times too. Let your child pick the word and no never, ever, ever, ever get mad at them for using it no matter what it is.

    DO NOT SCROLL PAST THAT.

Leo Varadkar wins: Ireland set to install first openly gay Prime Minister

The 38-year-old son of an Indian immigrant will succeed Enda Kenny

Ireland’s governing party Fine Gael has elected Leo Varadkar as its new leader, meaning the once-staunchly Catholic country will get its first openly gay prime minister.

The 38-year-old son of an Indian immigrant will also be the youngest-ever person to hold the office, succeeding Enda Kenny, 66, in a striking generational and social change. He is expected to be voted in as prime minister when parliament next sits on 13 June.

“If somebody of my age, of my mixed race background and of all the things that make up my character can potentially become leader of our country, then I think that sends out a message to every child born today that there is no office in Ireland that they can’t aspire to,” Mr Varadkar told Newstalk radio this week.

    Read the full piece here

Update: Irish readers are writing in to say that despite the groundbreaking nature of his choice as PM, he is anti-choice and classist.

This is still groundbreaking - POC aren’t perfect, women aren’t perfect, LGBTIA+ folks aren’t perfect, but we need the chance to succeed or fail, and it IS a step forward when glass ceilings or white ceilings etc. are broken.

With this spellbinding project, insanely talented artist @littlechmura wanted to create a self-contained moment for each of these beloved Harry Potter characters—a single scene that gives a glimpse into their own magical worlds. She’s calling the series “One Breath Each”, and we’re calling it GORGEOUS AF.

Things too many Harry Potter fans forget:

    • Dumbledore was in the middle of a war, his actions reflected that, he wasn’t plain evil or the best man Harry knew, he was human
    • James didn’t harass Lily and he and Snape both acted poorly, he wasnt just a ‘bully’ it was a two way street
    • Pettigrew was their friend, that’s what made the betrayal so horrible so stop leaving him out of fanart
    • Remus wasn’t stuck up or a complete nerd, yes he was smart but he was also a Marauder he was just as rebellious as Sirius, James and Peter
    • Lily didn’t hate James, Quidditch or pranks, stop basing Lily off of Hermione
    • Lily also didn’t spend all of her time in the library nor did she spend her time screeching at other students, she was smart but she was also a teenager don’t make her sound like an old woman
    • Sirius grew up in an abusive household
    • Sirius was 21 when Lily and James died, it was completely normal for him to have not have settled down
    • Draco was a teenager, him being a death eater doesn’t make him evil however don’t make him out to be perfect, acknowledge his upbringing and hatred for muggleborns throughout the series
    • The fact that everyone’s decisions in the series was based around the fact there was a war/their parents had been in a war
    • Regulus Black existed
